I’ll be honest with you. Gateway Motel was not our first choice. Of all the seedy little treasures on Las Vegas Blvd. north of The Strip, this little guy was a consolation prize at best.

We first tried The Oasis. Boasting free adult movies and jacuzzi fantasy suites, this sex pit of despair is where David Strickland (former BFF of Brooke Shields and Suddenly Susan cast member) hung himself in 1999 after a night out at a strip club with Andy Dick. Room 20 is said to be haunted by his ghost. Gambling legend Stu Unger also died there a year prior in 1998. However, in November of 2012, police shut down the motel for “unabashed prostitution.”

Hopes dashed, we tried this art deco monstrosity (doors all locked, some rooms hanging open, but others clearly being used) before ending up here. Nearby enough, this motel claimed to be the cheapest.

Dingy, cold, and smoky, the room’s brick walls slathered in off-white paint gave a homey, cell feel. Those transitioning to the outside may find this a cozy place for chainsmoking and carving names of former friends in the tattered tabletops with a knife.

This freezing bathroom offers lukewarm water for your bathing pleasures. Perfect after a night of the heater blowing lukewarm air.

This little joint is worth it if all you want to do is sleep in all of your clothes, huddling for warmth, and participating in the usual girltalk like comparing mattress stains. It is also haunted — by the smell of a wet dog. Evidence exists in dog treats left under the bed!

Also, this carpet feels wet. All of the time.

Napkin in the window hole, very classy.

You just don’t see green carpet like that in your finer establishments.
